Galileo Galilei is known as the successor of the teachings of Nicholas Copernicus.Scientists have determined that the sun rotates on its axis and on the basis of his observations concluded that the rotation axis is characteristic of all heavenly bodies, and that the heliocentric world system proposed by Copernicus, is the only correct one.However, in 1616 the Commission respected Italian theologians declared heretical teachings of Copernicus and his book "On the inversion of the Heavenly Spheres" was included in the index of forbidden books.
In 1632, Galileo published his book "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems - Ptolemaic and Kopernikovoi.
Soon the Italian Inquisition, considering the book heretical, have banned its sale, and Galileo was summoned to Rome, where tried.The investigation lasted from April to June 1633 and June 22 at the Dominican convent of St. Minerva, in the same church where his predecessor, Giordano Bruno listened to a sentence of death, Galileo, kneeling, renounced his own theory.In the last years of his life he had to work in harsh conditions.
At Archertri his villa in Florence, he was under house arrest and constant surveillance of the Inquisition.In November 1979, Pope John Paul II officially conceded that the Inquisition in 1633, made a mistake, to force the scientist to recant the Copernican theory.
