June 12, 1849 U.S. Patent Office issued Lewis Haslettu first patent for a device mask.Invention called the "lung protector" and consisted of a block with the valves on the inhale-exhale and felt filter, connected directly or through a tube to the block. The latter could be attached to the nose or mouth.Active work on improving the protection of respiratory organs began during the First World War, when in April 1915 in Germany and the French front the Germans had the first gas attack.
The second attack was staged on the Eastern Front against Russian troops. At that time, to protect against gases, the soldiers were given gauze masks impregnated with a special solution.
However, they were an unreliable means of protection. Then Russia`s eminent chemist Nicholas Zelinsky had an idea to use for protection against gas coal.
Through experimental studies it was found that toxic substances safely absorb the heat-treated birch charcoal. On the basis of its findings engineer Kummant created a mask made of rubber which fits snugly face and ensures the supply of air flow for breathing through the filter element.
In the manufacture of such masks took four months. In 1916 the army was sent the first batch of masks.During the First World War, they had produced about 11 million. |
