In 1872, in New York was opened Museum of Art.Initiators of the capital`s Metropolitan Museum of Art were American artists.At the very beginning the museum had no buildings, no collections, no funds.The first paintings were bought by the money a corporation headed by the trustees, specifically established for the organizational work of the museum.February 20, 1872 in a small building on Fifth Avenue was opened the first art gallery exhibition.
The exhibition includes 100 paintings, bought at Brussels, 74 paintings, purchased in Paris and Belgium.These were the paintings by Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, English, Flemish painters.Later, in Central Park was built their own three-story museum building with twelve rooms for exhibitions.
