The world`s first Soviet polar research drifting research station North Pole-1 "began work May 21, 1937.Five planes polar air expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR brought scientists on an ice floe.Official opening of "SP-1" was held on June 6, 1937.Above the North Pole was raised flag of the USSR.Staff Hydrologist Pyotr Shirshov, a geophysicist, astronomer Yevgeny K. Fedorov, and radioman Ernst Krenkel, headed by Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin lived and worked in a tent, studying the North Pole.
The size of the ice floe was 3x5 km, the thickness of 3 m.
Every month in Moscow to send reports on the progress of scientific work.Each day was full of new discoveries.The drift ice made it possible to wander around the North Pole.Established in the North Pole station "SP" after 9 months of drift in the south was made in the Greenland Sea.Floe drifted over 2000 km.After 274 days of ice left a piece of a width of about 30 meters.
The expedition was decided to evacuate.February 19, 1938 brave explorers took off ice icebreakers Taimyr and Murman.
In March, explorers submitted to the General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad, the results of scientific studies, which were highly appreciated by the scientific community.Scientific composition of the expedition have been assigned to academic degrees.Ivan D. Papanin and Ernest Teodorovich Ernst received the title Doctor of Geographical Sciences.For an outstanding feat, accomplished to the glory of Soviet science and in the development of the Arctic, polar four were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
Also, the title was given to pilots - A.D.Alekseev, PA. G.Golovin, I.AP. Mazuruk and M.I.Shevelyov. |
