"Surcouf - French submarine, Launched October 18, 1929, was the largest submarine in the world before the construction of the Japanese submarines I-400. It was designed for cruising on the ocean lanes of action and in addition to torpedoes, to conventional submarines, was armed with two 203-mm guns, carried a seaplane designed for reconnaissance and fire-art corrections.
In early February 1942 "Surcouf", fulfilling orders, was to arrive in Bermuda.
But come late, getting on the road damaged the main propulsion system.February 12 "Surcouf" left Bermuda.Able to walk only on the surface "Surcouf" out to sea and headed for the Panama Canal to go to the Pacific Ocean.The boat was working properly, only one engine and it could not reach speeds over 13 knots.In the Panama Canal boat is not arrived.
According to official figures, "Surcouf" sank during the night on Feb. 18, 1942 after a collision with a U.S. warship Thomson Layks.Thomson Layks "in a report reported that he was forced to return after a collision with an unidentified vessel that sank in just 10 degrees north latitude, 79 degrees west longitude.The ship conducted search up to 8 hours 30 minutes 19 February, but nothing except an oil slick was found.Neither the men nor the wreckage to discover it was not possible.
